Cold women

Well, J has vetoed seeing both Snow White and The Snow Queen, and while I'm disappointed, I understand her reason.  Both are brutal in their original forms, and she's so hyper aware of that sort of thing.  Really, when I think about the stepmother in Snow White sending the child to die in the forest, and asking for the girl's lungs and liver to be sent back so she can eat them... well, Game of Thrones has nothing on that.  I am spending a lot of time lately wondering what purpose this sort of storytelling serves.  Clearly we're driven to tell and listen to these sorts of stories.  Why?  I have ideas, but no answers.

Oh, speaking of legend, myth and fairytale, I just finished reading, Blue Lily, Lily Blue, by Maggie Stiefvater.  Still a good story, and holding my interest, but feels like the middle book of a trilogy (in this case, it's #3 out of 4).  It was disjointed.  Some things seemed like short cuts that were trying to transport us, rather abruptly, to where we need to be for the final volume, but without an obvious, logical flow.  That said, I enjoyed it anyway.  Even her less good things are still pretty good, and I'm thinking of rereading them all to see how this feels when the others are still fresh in my mind.  My fuzzy, sleep deprived memory could be part of the problem.
