Earth & Sea & Sky

Cape Meares
Funny to think we left for Oregon two months ago, and were only there for 10 days.  In some ways it seems like it never happened, but in other ways it was the catalyst for several important things which have happened since then.  I remember the trip as two very distinct experiences, and the one that is relevant to my art is my physical and visual perceptions of the landscape.  It was the most perfect, foggy, misty weather I could have asked for.  One day was almost too sunny, and one day was sheets of icy rain, but even those had their place and enhanced the experience.  The sea and the cliffs and the sky were magnificent.  I know why so many of the artists and authors who inspire me live on that coast.  Our relatives continuously apologized for the weather and seemed only to want the sunny days, the ones that stripped the mystery from the place.  I guess maybe if you only had a few sunny days a year you'd feel that way, but they really couldn't seem to grasp that we enjoyed the luminous grey fog as much as we did.   With our kitchen renovations, a ton of paperwork, my dance performance, and prep for a parade of summer guests on top of daily life, I haven't had much chance to paint or draw since we returned, but all these images, and the feeling of the mist and the wind and the sea on my toes is percolating in my brain.  It has affected decisions we've made about our home since we've returned: a piece of art we purchased there, an idea for our kitchen...
